/I work at a primarily white institution (PWI) & this positionality is important. I try to be extremely mindful of how I throw that weight around particularly at a public school in a blue state, but let me remind y'all that shouldn't mean as much as it does #NOMOREONLYs
/So, I know what it is like to attempt to move legacy organizations toward justice & I'm one of the 1st people to admit we need institutions to do better-That said, I will also say Sanger was trained as a nurse & was a eugenicist, racist AND did good work. All of these are true.
/Why bring this up? Cause here is where I take issue w/framing of her legacy: "We will no longer make excuses or apologize for Margaret Sanger’s actions. But we can’t simply call her racist, scrub her from our history, and move on." (cont'd)
/"We must examine how we have perpetuated her harms over the last century — as an organization, an institution, and as individuals." This continues to center her & I think we can do better. There are countless stories of Black folx we never hear of & that bugs me.
/The limited frame that one uses to understand reproductive health & rights when we can have reproductive justice (& quietly all 3) is where I want to and will invest my energy. This is where retrofit, reform, reimagine is helpful.
/I'm not interested in retrofitting the historical harms of white nurses & others who were willing to settle for hush-hush conversations about abortion, birth, consent, contraception, healthy sexuality, infertility, pleasure reproductive cancer.
/All complexities of a full human life. Why settle for pages when you can have the whole book?
/So, as organizations try to figure out how to retrofit themselves, maybe what we need is a reform & a reimagine.
END/Healthcare reparations means we have different conversations about how services are provided cause our current systems really doesn't work for patients (mistreatment) or providers (burnout) cause our workplaces are inhumane & need to be remade.
