AAVE is not stan language or internet culture. y’all just found out about it and only hear it on the internet cuz you’re not around niggas in real life.
seeing a lot of replies like, “i wish it was just called ebonics, a white person probably made up AAVE,” when a quick google search would inform you that the same person coined both terms

ebonics is the original term defining our language as our own, AAVE is a documented dialect
the terms have been around for basically the same amount of time, but it’s said linguists used the term “ebonics” to ridicule black english rather than validate it as it’s own thing. (i know you’ve heard people say ‘ebonics’ when mocking how black people speak.)
hence the popularity in the phrase, “african american vernacular english.” which again, always existed (more notably called african american english.)

that term describes the way we speak clearly, making sure it’s not watered down to “slang.”

cuz it’s not slang.
calling the way we normally speak “slang” denotes that it’s not proper english, when in fact, it is. it’s just specific to black people.

summary, white linguists made “ebonics” synonymous with “improper english,” so niggas now use a term they can’t redefine.
