Yes. I’m still annoyed. Especially to the white authors who said “it’s not fair,” regarding Meghan Markle’s book, and that we should give "struggling writers" a chance. Here’s a little tiny taste of what it’s like to be "black in publishing...” (another thread)
Four years ago I pitched a regency romance about a black duke in a multicultural UK. I was told it wasn’t “historical accurate” and historical romance fans wouldn’t buy it. FOUR YEARS AGO. Now I’m watching Bridgerton (love it btw). But they discouraged me on it.
Instead I was encouraged by several different ppl to write something more “authentic,” like my family's immigrant story or something based on my life as 1st generation child. Or something on slavery (yes, really, this man once told me he thought I’d be very “successful" at it.)
Meanwhile I’m watching white authors get massive book deals, which leads to them getting tv/movie deals, where they have to INSERT diversity that was never there in the original books...Why? B/c they wish to be “inclusive” while being the same.
So when you say to me “It’s not fair” not only are you wrong...but I 👏🏾 don’t 👏🏾give 👏🏾a 👏🏾damn if you were right! I hope Meghan Markle moonwalks over every bestseller list for weeks!
