1 #WSTC7 #ClimSesh We carried out a literature review to understand the mechanisms by which climate change affects 25 species breeding within the EU funded INTERREG VA region. We identified 156 relevant studies (64 considered multiple species). #BTOScience #MarPAMMSeabirds
2 #WSTC7 #ClimSesh Indirect mechanisms were mediated through prey/predator interactions (116 studies), and frequently related to climate variables of SST/NAO. Direct mechanisms were immediate/physical e.g. flooding of breeding sites/temperature stress from storms (24 studies).
3 #WSTC7 #ClimSesh Foraging range and behaviour were important determinants of differing responses to climate change displayed between species. In particular, long vs short ranging, or diving vs. surface seizing species were influenced by climate related mechanisms differently.
4 #WSTC7 #ClimSesh Climate change was found to primarily effect the study region through long-term/indirect/bottom-up mechanisms through changes in prey populations. Several colonies dominated the literature, so caution is needed when generalising mechanisms from other regions.
