There’s a political cartoon going around that depicts a a fat antivaxxer sitting on the ball part of a ball and chain that’s attached to the ankle of a bald person (maybe old) clawing their way toward a herd immunity finish line. The casual fat hate is a punch in the face.

When fat people were eligible for the vaccine because of bmi, people freaked the fuck out. In fact, many fat people I know were profoundly conflicted because they didn’t want to take the vaccine from other more at-risk folks.

My lungs are garbage but my biggest fear during the pandemic re: my own health was actually how medical folks would treat me - or not treat me, allowing me to die rather than use resources on a fat person. This was not a groundless fear.

So here we are, once again used as a symbol of selfish willful ignorance causing other people - more virtuous people - to suffer. This is exhausting. This is so painful. I CONCUR that antivaxxers are literally harming everyone at this point. But using fatness in this way...

It actively harms fat people. And maybe you think it’s fine to sacrifice fat folks because of the point about antivaxxers but I think that’s shitty and you can do better. Please do better. We are trying to get vaxxed and you are making us into villains no matter what we do.
