I want to explain why this is so horrific because my timeline seems strangely quiet about it. https://twitter.com/standardnews/status/1389851973030121475
This is near my family home, deep in the Kent countryside. People are a mix of long time rural and Londoners who have moved down. It’s quiet, beautiful and not much happens.
If you are a child you can roam fields with friends. Women walk their dogs, run alone, mums and their kids do evening walks without fear.
It took along time for all our communities, all the little villages around here to recover that sense of security and safety after Lin and Megan Russell were murdered. It was brutal and it changed everything.
I was ten, allowed out to explore with friends, finding independence. That changed instantly. There was a just this massive, collective loss of innocence. The shock waves were huge.
The murder of a mum and her young daughter, and leaving the Josie for dead, while they were out walking, is still something I find hard to wrap my head around.
Julia’s horrific murder has brought back the fear and terror felt by many twenty-five years ago. No-one is out walking alone. I’ve come home to a place that feels on edge. But there won’t be any marches in her name.
Outside of our communities, no-one seems to understand that this was a woman out walking her dog in broad daylight, somewhere that should have been totally safe. She’s been bludgeoned to death by a total stranger.
It is not normal or usual or understandable or a bit unnerving. It’s terrifying, so if you think women should be able to walk their dogs alone, without being brutally murdered by a stranger in the English countryside MAKE SOME FUCKING NOISE.
People following me who claim to be feminists, do you care less because:

- she’s an older woman?
- she was out walking alone and you wouldn’t do that?
- you think it’ll turn out to be someone she knew, so sad etc but not scary?
I’m just trying to understand where you all are on this, because it’s def not standing in a vigil, it’s def not organising a March, it’s not even doing the barest minimum of sharing the news reports and trying to raise awareness.
And hi to all the young, amazing journalists on here, who were so active over Sarah a few months ago. We are in the same area. Deal is less than 30 mins away. This doesn’t matter less just because Julia’s not like you. Get down here. Do the profile. Talk to people.
Short PSA: Really appreciate the interest from journos in my DM’s but I absolutely will not be doing any interviews on this thread.
