Following my Kickstarter 'How To' blog post last week, I thought I'd outline a quick condensed version of some of the key points which really helped me raise just under £25k for a £5k graphic novel campaign & deliver the goods (whilst staying sane.)

Calculate Your Final Costs In Advance :

Ensure you double and then triple check print costs, taxes, and any other fees before you launch. Postage can be insanely pricey. Give yourself a buffer so you're not counting pennies to go into the green.
Work with pros :

I was honoured to work with @CinemamindDavid @MikeOB @SlothHoffman and @spookybri - all of whom were seasoned pros. Ensure you get a great team together before you start work.
Spend time on your KS's aesthetic:

It's absolutely worth your time getting your Kickstarter looking as good as possible. Mockup final products, put up an eye-catching video & keep a consistent aesthetic feel throughout. Once up it'll remain there forever so make it look great.
Reach out and connect:

Find other creators Kickstarting similar content and share updates, info on your campaigns via backerswaps. It's a great way to connect to new people and introduce you to campaigns you'll probably love.
Setting up your Kickstarter Page Early :

I've been told Kickstarter can be fast for approving campaigns. But Kickstarter was sloooooow for approving Early Haunts. If you can, put it for approval as soon as possible so you're not waiting to launch.
Get the Word Out:

Plan your social media posts. Social media only ever broadcasts to a set number of people so keep rotating. If people like your work then they're not going to unfollow for a few messages about your campaign. Don't forget to use mailing lists & interviews too.
Packaging material:

Calculate your time for dispatch and get your packing materials well in advance. Bubble wrap, jiffy bags, etc. Then when you're ready to go - get your backer lists ready and waiting for ticking off backers as you pack.
Posting:

Posting takes way longer than most people imagine. If you can, connect with a great post office that can do click and drop and have plenty of postal sacks.

Oh and 80's rock makes for a fine packing soundtrack.
That's it!

But there's a more comprehensive guide over on my site.

Kickstarting amidst a pandemic isn't the most relaxing of tasks. But it's hugely rewarding and well worth it if you've a passion for the project.
