reminded today that the term "homosexual agenda" was made up in the early 90s in Lincoln, Nebraska, where half the city council is now LGBT

It started with a UNL psychologist, Dr. Paul Cameron. Back in the 70s he observed that gay people were isolated from their families. He could have concluded families should stop rejecting queer kids! Instead, he decided to victim-blame gay people themselves.

A feminist group called LINCOLN LEGION OF LESBIANS came out of the closet and started demanding their rights in 1980. They wanted an end to legal discrimination against LGBT Nebraskans. They were brave and organized.

This drove Cameron totally wild

Cameron used his credentials to pump out heaps of homophobic pseudoscience. The religious right ate it up! They made Cameron a superstar. This culminated in a video, The Gay Agenda (1992) that went out to churches across America. Back when viral videos were VHS tapes.

As a genderqueer young person in the 1990s, the environment these propaganda videos created was terrifying. Many in my generation are scarred by the constant suspicion of our sexuality during childhood.

That's why it feels SO GOOD to see old homophobes on the city council get replaced literally by gay people.

Dr. Cameron thought that LGBT people were socially isolated and dysfunctional by nature. Now, they lead civil society in his home town.

The "agenda" they feared was simply acceptance.

Every time you accept your sexuality, your gender, your body. Every time you accept the ambiguity and beauty of others. Every time you take queer political power. You are 1990s homophobes worst nightmare. PLEASE NEVER STOP
