Over the weekend ~15 California condors descended on my moms house and absolutely trashed her deck. They still haven’t left. It sucks but also this is unheard of, there’s only 160 of these birds flying free in the state and a flock of them decided to start a war with my mom 😭
Just got off the phone with mom. So, tho those that know her will all agree she is one of the strongest women ever. But I’m even more in awe knowing that my tiny little mom was staring down a bunch of birds half her size from less than 10 ft away trying to shoo them away
Happy Mother’s Day mom, hope you like the condors 😂😭
She does think this is pretty amazing but also the worst. They don’t have to leave her property but leave the house alone. They keep hanging out on her roof and railings messing with stuff and pooping everywhere. Trees are fine but not the house please 🙏
Checked in with mom, they’re still hanging out ominously on one of her trees but thankfully are not on the house at the moment. She’s reaching out to some condor groups to alert them so they can observe the birds and maybe help keep them off her house
Tho tbh how does one convince 20 large birds to do anything lol
Update after being MIA for half the day mom said that they have returned and now theyre circling overhead. Haven’t messed with the house tho so fingers crossed they’re enjoying the neighborhood but being good neighbors now 🤞
Still wild to me that in my lifetime there went from being about 25 condors left alive to now almost that many descending on my moms house at once. Makes me wonder if we will start seeing more giant flocks as their numbers rise (I’ve only ever seen 3-4 by her house before)
Good morning to everyone especially my mom who gave these two condors on her roof a “shower” this morning with a hose. Now they’re back chilling with the rest of the flock on her tree. Watching. Waiting. Doing condor things
Mom had to run errands and leave the house. Thankfully they didn’t trash it the moment she left but she did return home to 6 circling overhead. Our theory is they go off to do condor things like look for food during the day but they always return for cocktail hour in the evening
The ravens (who normally hang in my mom’s trees) have returned and are now hanging out with the condors in the same tree. I’m not sure how I feel about this bird alliance...
Your Friday morning condor report calls for 2 condors sitting watching my mom’s house while the rest circle over the valley (likely looking for food). We predict afternoon showers of more condors followed by condors and ravens in the evening. Stay tuned
Also yesterday evening my mom found what we assume is a pellet from a condor (I suspect #52 since he really likes her roof). Like owls, condors will barf up any undigested bits of their food like bones and teeth
Mom got to finally have a long talk with a Fish and Wildlife employee that she got connected to! Im excited to chat with her later and hear what she learned about her new condor kids. ☺️🪶
BTW if you have made a condor meme please drop it in the comments here! I have heard rumors of them and saw one but forgot to take a screenshot
My mom hung out with her neighbors today who informed her the birds have been on her roof a lot more than she thought! At least they’re not making noise, they seem to just find it a comfy seat 🤷‍♀️
The condors are back for “cocktail hour” as my mom says. Here they are riding the updraft. Just some condors cruising the windy waves on a Friday evening 😎
Mom talked to a condor expert from Fish and Wildlife who told her that condors like to ride the updrafts because they’re poor fliers and don’t flap their wings much. Makes sense since they’re the largest bird that can fly. Takes a lot of effort to keep them up in the air!
Yesterday evening mom was able to look thru a telephoto lens and see that what from a distance looks like a raven or hawk is actually a young condor! Hard to see in the pic but the smaller bird on the right is under 2 years old because he has a crown of feathers around his neck!
Also she talked to a condor expert from Fish and Wildlife and we have a theory on why her house! Condors use heat and updrafts to fly and can fly 150 miles without flapping their wings by surfing the wind. Mom’s house gets sunlight all day and winds from the east and west.
So the condors likely realized “hey this place is great! We can stay here at night and then surf the wind to find food during the day and know we can always catch a wave home. Plus it has a sweet deck to party on!” 🦅 🎉
Mom had to go into town and when she came back one was on the roof & two were just chillin off her deck. Many more were circling overhead with some ravens, turkey vultures, and hawks! Guess word is out in the bird community that my mom’s place is the place to be. She got video!
45 here is almost 3 years old and from a conservatory in Idaho!
