"Does climate have a gender problem?" asked @KealeyBoyd. Well, yes. And I have been feeling this acutely as my area of expertise-- forest carbon offsets-- is in the news a lot right now. A quick 🧵
In the last few months I have spoken with a lot of reporters, several a week. Interviews range from 15 mins to 1-2 hour recorded calls, often with producers, editors and fact checking involved. Yet, with the exception of one (thanks @theworld!) I've been cut from every story.
And it's not only me. Jane Zelikova has a great thread on the system exclusion of women in science reporting, and its costs. @j_zelikova https://twitter.com/j_zelikova/status/1387795910847975430?s=20
And remember this dumpster fire of @Reuters Hot List of 1,000 top climate scientists, and only 122 were women? Lisa Schipper has a great thread on this- including its exclusion of experts from the Global South: @schipper_lisa https://twitter.com/schipper_lisa/status/1384843457596956672?s=20
I often feel like I am called upon to provide a Master Class in carbon offsets, and specific carbon projects, to reporters who use it as background to build a story, without attributing credit.
While I've learned my lesson on being protective of my time, I am concerned that too many women are being asked to provide time, labor, and intellectual expertise without recognition of the incredible effort they put into building that knowledge.
While there are tools, like @500womensci's GAGE @Gage_500WS, to make it easy to find woman or gender minority experts all over the world, once those experts are consulted, they need to be represented in reporting, otherwise they remain unseen and unrecognized.
I teach and work with so many brilliant woman scientists from all over the world, including many leading experts on carbon markets, climate tech, and land-based offsets. It's disappointing that in 2021 the journalism continues to privilege a few male voices.
