Graham Potter, one of the best managers in the world

A thread
Potter and Brighton are known for underperforming xG massively but the reason why Potter is one of the best managers in the world is not only because his team creates tons of chances, it goes beyond that

We will start to debunk some myths...
1) “Potter is an attacking manager and doesn’t care about defence”

This season only Man City (25.7) and Chelsea (27.9 have conceded less quality chances than Brighton (33.2). But even they aren’t even that unlucky with defence as they only conceded 39 goals, amazing system.
2) “Potter plays entertaining football but it’s not efficient”

This comes from the fact that Brighton miss a lot of chances, but creating chances is very efficient, Potter isn’t up front to finish. Brighton also only average 51.7% possession on average which is nothing crazy
Why is Potter (and Brighton) good ?

This is well known but I just wanted to remind it, Brighton have an xG differential p90 of +0.45 which ranks them 5th in the Premier League, ahead of Leicester, Tottenham and West Ham.

Ok but how can we prove that this is thanks to Potter ?
This is where managers isolated impact comes in

What is it ? Well it’s complicated, after a game, a part of the xG is explained but not the other part. And this part will consist of the isolated impact, if a manager “improves” his team’s xG the model would ranks him as “good“
But it has flaws of course. For example if a manager picks very bad players but makes them over perform, he would be ranked as “good”. It remains a raw estimate of an actor who doesn’t enter the football pitch.

But I still find it interesting so I will use it 👉
Here is the ranking of the “best” managers this season according to the isolated impact model from http://macro-football.com
Potter ranks among the top, this is a good way to prove that he actually had a very big impact on this Brighton team and is definitely one of the best managers in the world. His system is very flexible as well, not tiki taka but not counter attack.
