Because of the country we live in, many of us fail to offer people the empathy & care they deserve because we have internalized harmful ideas around physical & mental health disabilities.

We have been taught to view traumatized people as disposable — as a danger to our society.
This is directly connected to capitalism, to imperialism, heteropatriarchal violence, to racism, & all other colonial systems that abuse our communities.

So much of our trauma is caused by systems that exploit human beings, forcing us to experience high levels of stress & pain.
This is especially true when it comes to poor communities who are never able to prioritize their physical or mental health because they’re too busy surviving capitalism. Healthcare is not accessible to poor people because of insurance costs & because they can’t take time off.
So instead, they are forced to bring their work issues homes, often taking out their anger and sadness on their families.

Or they use substances to cope each day, leading to addictions that can affect their day to day life.
This creates a cycle of generational trauma and of hurt people who do not know how to communicate or cope in healthy ways.
While some people may be able to get the support they need in order to heal, a large majority of our communities experience chronic depression, anxiety, personality disorders, & other mental health (and learning) disabilities that prevent them from “functioning” under capitalism.
And if people can’t serve the state (meaning that they’re no longer easily exploitable and able to work), then they are deemed invaluable.

This is why our government provides little support to disabled communities, giving them money that falls far below poverty wages.
When it comes to learning and mental health disabilities, our society takes it a step further and punishes hurt people that aren’t able to mask their symptoms.

So many people with mental health issues are thrown into prisons and asylums that actually cause more trauma.
These institutions exist to hide traumatize people from the rest of society & to hurt them more.

All of this is intentional, so that disabled people are unable to survive (that’s why a large majority of unhoused people are disabled — because they are deemed disposable).
Politicians and all the rich people in power want us to look at traumatized and disabled communities as the problem; they want us to hate them, blame them, criminalize them.
Just look at how we treat those struggling with drug addictions — we see them as the monsters, as people actively choosing this lifestyle when addictions are a systemic and mental health issue that require a lot of community and professional support to overcome.
Our government has convinced us to dispose of our own people, to look at them with contempt & disgust so that we enable state sanctioned violence committed.

This is why the state is so comfortable actively terrorizing unhoused communities, attempting to push them out of sight.
Because so many people have internalized classist views, choosing to enable and push for harm against poor people. They don’t want to face the reality that all these “crazy” poor people are actually disabled, traumatized human beings that have been neglected by our society.
And rather than extend understanding to other human beings, many of us are conditional with who we see as deserving of help and resources. This is because of the propaganda we’ve been fed since childhood (“pulling ourselves up by the bootstraps,” “the American dream,” etc).
We have normalized suffering to the point that it’s considered a natural part of life. Some people have even learned to glamorize the struggle, to romanticize exploitation. They take pride in having to work multiple jobs, with little time to rest and to prioritize ourselves.
That’s why people point the finger at those who couldn’t adapt to these violent human-made systems, instead of organizing against the politicians and the CEOs slowly killing communities.

They see unhoused people as lazy, rather than a product of our capitalist society.
We live in a country that wants to make this collective suffering invisible, and tries to push the responsibility and the blame onto individuals rather than the systems in place that cause all this.
Our society revolves around productivity & being the “greatest nation in the world.”

And if we are forced to face these truths, then we will learn that this country is a fascist state, benefiting only a handful of people while our communities live in a constant state of fear.
