I spent May Day reading stories from Unemployed Action members. It is agonizing to read what UI puts people through.

Homelessness. Food insecurity. Savings wiped out. Too poor to relocate for a job. Can’t afford to retire.

Yet billionaire wealth surged during this pandemic!
There’s also a unique despair connected to the combination of material deprivation, dread/anxiety of benefit cliffs, Kafkaesque claims administration, and existential horror that your life has been ruined by a totally impersonal global crisis compounded by government callousness.
Yes callousness.

CARES Act money was amazing. In fact it generated 70% of UI money in the pandemic.

There’s no guarantee of any CARES Act next time. And we shouldn’t have had to rely on temporary bandaids.
Some current members Congress were in office during the Great Recession.

They didn’t know COVID was coming but they knew the UI system would fail us in the next recession. And they refused to act.

We have to #FixUI now, in the #AmericanFamiliesPlan. No excuses.
