I'm submitting in support of Māori wards in Kirikiriroa. As tangata tiriti, I support Māori representation and tino rangatiratanga. Not only is it the right thing to do, it's also about better decision-making.

I'll post my submission in this thread, feel free to copy and paste or modify:
I was not born in Aotearoa, but came here as a young child. Kirikiriroa has been my home for 47 years, it's the place I belong to and am deeply connected to.
At high school, I learned about the history of colonisation in this country. I was born in a country that also has a history of colonisation which resulted in significant loss of resources and extreme poverty. That country was split apart as our colonisers left.
I've been to historical sites from the New Zealand Wars, I've visited Waitangi several times and listened to the histories there, I have taken part in Te Tiriti training several times to refresh my knowledge.
Regardless of which version of Te Tiriti you look at (and international law says that the indigenous language version is the legal one), Māori did not give up their rights to land, air or water. Their resources were stolen from them through raupatu (confiscations), ...
...and while settlements have been made, in no way do those settlements reflect the totality of what was lost.
This is our historical context, a context where Māori culture, language and values have been consistently denigrated and denied.
This has made it incredibly difficult for Māori to gain representation in local government, which has been to the detriment of the community as a whole.
I support Māori wards. Article 2 of Te Tiriti grants tino rangatiratanga and Māori wards are a step towards this.
