From one of the splash style guides I've helped to make - the concept of detail frequency is super important. Splash art aims to be cinematic and believable, but too much detail everywhere can be overwhelming and make an image look flat.
But used effectively, detail can add contrast (high frequency vs. rest areas), depth and lead the viewer's eye.
In character focused illustrations like these, the character's face is almost always our focal area. Heatmaps like these show how detail is concentrated in the focal area, and falls off as we move away from where the viewer should be focusing.
It's ok if you go too far, I do in my work, too. I balance this out by setting aside time in polish / post to soften edges, add lens blurs, group or push separation in values etc. to reign the frequency back in.
