It’s AAPI/APA/API/APIDA Heritage Month! Here are some responses & reflections after asking people why they prefer different acronyms to refer to us: (1/5)
1. There is zero consensus on what is preferred, but everyone was trying to be as inclusive & respectful as possible. Some people arrived at different acronyms they think show this more for various reasons. So whatever term you use, use it respectfully and with kindness. (2/5)
2. I makes me happy when we refer to our large, diverse, panethnic group a “family” because in so many of our cultures everyone is an auntie, uncle, or cousin. (3/5)
3. I used to be frustrated by the lack of consensus bc it felt like a lack of cohesion. But the more I think about it, I like the idea that we aren& #39;t so easily definable. Identity & culture are constantly evolving so language that is dynamic can be exciting & appropriate. (4/5)
4. I LOVE the idea of not having one “right” acronym bc I look forward to seeing others squirm when they talk about us, unsure if they& #39;ve offended us. Maybe I will purposely use all the acronyms at different times just for funsies. Such power in chaos!!! MUAHAHAHA!!! (5/5)
