Seems to me that whenever a controversial past is brought up the goto move is always, "May you find peace," or "I wish you well moving forward," never "You are absolutely right," or "Uncomfortable as it might be to admit, those things absolutely did happen." https://twitter.com/petersimeti/status/1388571443387158530
When does merely acknowledging the past become "dwelling?" Furthermore, the case can be made that a lack of retrospection is what has led to several of this nation's issues, current problems included. No, positive messages absolutely do not invalidate the past,
God knows we need all the positivity we can get. However, pointing a troubling history, whether it's sexism, racism, or prejudice practices of any kind, should be a fairly simple affair. It is BECAUSE these types of behaviors have historically been so ensconced in
secrecy, denial and shielded from righteous retribution that great care must be taken to ensure the nature of such realities can never go unchecked again. Of course, the past cannot be rewritten, but to say that dwelling on it is moot I feel misses... several marks. Respectfully.
Like the old heads used to tell me, "If you ain't ever been through it just keep livin." History slaps different for everybody, especially when it's part of who you are or those close to you. Happy history, painful history, in-between history, even excruciatingly specific history
People grieve/celebrate/teach/rejoice in their own way, and for some, that means acknowledging a history that's not exactly "dinner conversation material." I also get how creators can feel their not approaching "topic x" the way so-and-so wanted is wholly unfair and restrictive.
I mean no disrespect to any and all in this thread convo, but something just would not let me go on with my day without responding. Anyways, that's my two cents.
Love everybody.
