Okay so my thoughts on the new YouTube Shorts sampling feature. General opinion: this is actually a REALLY good move, even if YT is terrible at communication.
A thread, (1/?)
I used a test account to clip one of my own videos to see how it works. A couple of things I notice:
1. There& #39;s a button on the lower right with the original creator& #39;s pfp
2. Every short links back directly to the source audio it was clipped from
If you want to use the content in your own videos, the og creator/video is featured prominently at the top of the page.

Everyone using the sound and searching for other Shorts using it will see that when browsing.
It seems to be very algorithm-centric, and surprisingly, creator friendly. I can see a lot of thought put into how this works, and WHY the feature was created in the first place
Issues:
1: People will take & use others& #39; content if they want to. There is no preventing this.
2: TikTok/Short culture THRIVES off of derivative works.
3: Crediting sources is an afterthought at best, and hurts original creators
So let& #39;s try this:
1. Create a native feature to make derivative works
2. Make it THE easiest option. Encourage people to use it, discourage more time-consuming methods.
3. Directly link it to the source material. Every derivative has credit baked in.
Most importantly:
4. Give the original creator COMPLETE control over the derivative works. Allow them to take down all of these videos if they so wish.
This move feels like it both meets a clear demand, AND solves an existing problem.

People want to make memes.
Creators want credit for their work.

This meets both of those criteria, and likely will give a GREAT algorithm boost to og creators.
If something goes viral now, I think this will bring back a ton of traffic to the source. Now the creators get a piece of the pie and not just the clippers/meme channels.
My one complaint is, of course, making it opt-out.

But that just feels like standard Youtube bs to me. It immediately lets clipping be used by everyone.

I guarantee there would also be a flood of "why can& #39;t I clip this??!?" comments if it were the other way around.
