How Kanye West changed the game with 808’s and Heartbreak (a thread)
This a story I’m pretty sure most of you know, but as I was listening to the album I thought it might be fun to look back at the impact this album had on the culture.
In 2007, Kanye was on top of the game after releasing one of his most successful albums to date, Graudation which debuted at number 1 on the US Billboard 200, selling over 957,000 copies in the 1st week of sales.

Things were looking good for him until things took a left turn..
Kanye West was expected to release his 4th studio album titled “Good Ass Job” but it ended up getting scrapped due to the circumstances going on throughout his life at the time.
Which was the passing of his mother Donda and breaking up with his girlfriend, Alexis Phifer.
Kanye then focused his creative process with a completely different direction. With the help of Kid Cudi who was an inspiration for Ye for this album, there was a combination of sounds that relied heavily on the 808’s drum machine and Autotune throughout the entire record.
808s and Heartbreak released on November 24, 2008. It was a commercial success and received a wide variety of reviews. The critics and fans were 50/50 on it due to such a drastic change of sound at the time.
With this album Kanye planted the seeds for the melody-driven rap that dominates the charts today. Most notably with Drake, who has credited Ye as the most influential person for his sound.
There has been more artists like Juice WRLD and Lil Uzi Vert that have come out and credit Yeezy for the impact 808’s and Heartbreak had on their lives.
It’s hard to imagine songs like this without the existence of 808’s and Heartbreak.
The melodic style of rap can be heard throughout all of HipHop today, and it’s something Kanye saw back since 2008.
Wether you like 808’s & Heartbreak or not, the impact it had on HipHop is undeniable; and the genre would’ve been a lot different today if it wasn’t for Kanye West.
This is the end of the thread.
