Here's 7 things I learned from working with the biggest YouTubers on the platform -- as a designer.

(this thread would've earned me thousands $$$ more in my early and late career)

4 years in the making.

THREAD 🙏
Just before we get into it...

I'd really appreciate you dropping a RT on this if you get any value out of it whatsoever.

You'd do me a real solid. Pleaaaase? :)
1: They have way more money than you think.

My biggest mistake was charging under $100 for YouTubers with >100K subscribers. My motion designs are simple, but often times I can easily afford charging $70+ an hour or more.

Start your prices at $120. You'll thank me later.
Again: I've charged many hundreds of dollars for really simple animations. And it wasn't a rip-off.

The key is leverage. What will your work earn them?

> Make them recognizable as a brand (--> money & rep.)
> Get them more likes/subs --> views --> money
> More retention?
(I teach this in my book, which changed many lives for the better -- consider checking it out at the link in my bio)

...on with the thread:
2: They can be very picky -- more so than your average client.

YouTubers care a LOT, sometimes too much (!), about the way they look online. After all, it's what makes their living.

They can be super picky and difficult. Learn to deal with them, and be courteous at ALL times.
3: Never be afraid to reject a client if they seem like a CFH.

CFH: Client From Hell.

Seriously. Learn the signs. Even if they offer you a lot of money, it's seriously not worth dealing with a CFH.

A couple signs they're a CFH:
If they:

> speak bad English
> have a crazy specific brief and keep emphasizing the importance of details that don't seem to matter to you
> make a big deal about pricing and haggling your prices down (RUN!!)

etc.

Ok. Next point.
4: Network is EVERYTHING with YouTubers.

I landed my biggest gigs with networking. Know the community's most important people. Thumbnail designers have huge reach -- befriend them if you can (but don't be a pain about it).

YouTubers WILL recommend you. They WILL RT your work.*
*If you ask politely.

So don't be afraid to ask!! 70% of my clients (most of them with 100K+ followers) retweeted my work and landed me many more clients as a result.

Also amazing social proof, and will help your posts perform well automatically.
5: Accidently took on a CFH? Don't waste your time. Refund that shit.

It's just not worth the pain, brother. Plus, if they have a bad experience, the aforementioned network effect will seriously mess you up.

Seeming courteous and kind is more important than $$ in the moment.
6: They're just people. Treat them as such.

You can often times turn a bad situation around by being kind. We all hate dealing with customer service people that follow an exact script at all times. Don't be afraid to make jokes.

Just follow basic etiquette as well (grammar).
7: Giveaways do wonders -- use the butterfly effect to your advantage. Turn 1 simple animation into $2000+ of leverage.

This is by far my most important point. I'll spend a little more time on it.

These are the steps:
1. Find a high-value thing to give away that is EASY to imagine for your audience (subscribe animations work well)
a. the more novel, the better
2. Make the thing, and make it better than what is commonly seen
3. "RT & Like --> you'll have a chance to win this"
4. Hope it goes viral. You may have to try a couple times. Try to preserve your image as "exclusive" and "premium" so your prices can align.

If even 1 big YouTuber finds you through this method (and you gain a couple hundred followers) and they end up retweeting...*
*That's huge.

Giveaway --> 1 youtuber --> youtuber retweets your work when you're done --> 3 more YouTubers approach you --> they retweet... etc.

After doing this method.. I had a WAITING LIST of 15+ >400K sub YouTubers. They waited MONTHS. It was stressful!
Write these down for yourself and follow the 7 tips.

1. They have more money than you think -- charge high
2. They can be picky -- be courteous and patient
3. Never be afraid to reject them -- it's not worth it!
4. Network is EVERYTHING -- use it!
5. Refund if it doesn't work!
6. They're just people -- don't be afraid to joke around! Fun relationships last longer and are more valuable.
7. Giveaways do wonders -- use the butterfly effect to your advantage.
