To highlight the diversity of the AAPI community and identity, tell me:
• where you/your parents are from,
• about your family’s diasporic/immigration journey or patterns
• how you personally identify racially/culturally/ethnically
I’ll start. My parents are both from India, but my grandparents lived in Pakistan before the partition so I identify as South Asian (which is more encompassing) but Indian, Punjabi, & Sikh more specifically. Also...
My mom was raised in Kobe, Japan (after my grandfather immigrated there 70ish years ago) & my maternal grandparents, uncle, aunts, cousins, etc have lived there for my entire life. I am often more nostalgic for Japan than India since I spent ~2 months/year there until I was 18.
My parents were the first on both sides to immigrate West, moving to London for a few years with my older siblings before settling in Virginia, where I was born. I currently have family in the U.S, UK, Canada, India, Singapore, and Japan.
