so when i talked abt trigger warnings here in this context, what i meant is, there is literally no way i can be warned of or Know that a fic is going to have some kind of racist interpretation of the members or the setting. for example, i don't read historical aus from ⚪ ppl. https://twitter.com/sweetorsaltyy/status/1388544362364219395
i tend not to read historical fantasy or high fantasy from ⚪ writers. now i have a reason for that. it's because i don't trust that they will try to replicate social issues in their fics and then do it badly. but again, i don't know. i would have to read to know.
what i meant by that is, is there a trigger warning for "replication of social issues but handled in a ⚪ person way" ? absolutely not. is there a trigger warning for "fic is vaguely set in asia but all elements of it are super americanized"? absolutely not.
now here's the thing and this is why poc are boiling and finally speaking up! we HAVE been timidly pointing this out for years on end particularly in this fandom too. we have been trying to say smth and we are then being ignored.
this is what happens when we speak up, so let me give u a general timeline:
1. ⚪ writer/artist posts fic/art that is inherently racist in nature
2. poc reader/writer points it out
3. ⚪ content creator gets defensive, ropes in rest of ⚪ circle
4. poc psn starts feeling stupid
5. ⚪ psn starts saying variation of these racist dogwhistles: "don't like don't read" "stop harassing writers" "ao3 lets you post what you want" "but this is what this one article online which i bothered to skimread, said" "fandom censorship is an issue"
6. now here is what is really important to hear, understand and internalize: ⚪ writers will never get many aspects of being poc correct. and that's smth which isn't great but which will happen. poc will point it out. so what matters here?

it's your RESPONSE.
7. it's the way you respond to an upset poc reader. you say: "i fucked up. i am truly sorry. i recognize u don't owe me this but how can i better rework this story?"
8. or the better thing u CAN do is ask a poc for a sensitivity reading for a fic! or u can even PAY poc for sensitivity readings of ur fic! those are tangible solutions i am giving u lot.
9. now what are some reasons why ⚪ writers aren't engaging in this discussion and shirking away from it. i have reasons listed here:
- ur panicking that poc will namedrop u next
- u don't like this stuff being on ur tl, it's an escape from reality ugh
- u feel like ppl r so Angy
- u feel like these angry poc aren't engaging in good faith and have Ulterior motives which is to put u down and elevate only themselves
- u don't understand any of this! u have been encouraged to portray diversity in ur fics! why r efforts to do that being Dismissed!
so let me answer all of those quite simply: do you care? do you genuinely care abt the members and by extension, other poc? do you genuinely care about us? do you genuinely care abt poc, their betterment and wellbeing? do you genuinely care to learn more about us?
do you genuinely care to amplify our voices, do you genuinely care to do better, not expect recognition for doing it? do u genuinely want to put in the hard work of being anti-racist or u r good just fighting w ur racist family/friends abt how "these asian boys make good music!"
the simple question: do u care? do u care enough not to gaslight poc? do u care enough to swallow ur pride and realize that actually ur privilege elevates only u? think abt it. we all got some thinking to do. we all have some learning to do. that's all
additional points here: when such a situation happens, do u amplify and retweet only ⚪ ppl who are saying the "right" things or are you taking the time, effort and care to amplify and retweet poc speaking up? because u will not learn much from a ⚪ psn saying the "right" things
u will learn if u swallow ur pride and come to a poc because we will give u the context, insights and perspective. u will understand so much better if u ask us and listen to us first, not ur ⚪ mutuals who r also learning alongside u
if u understand the situation as a ⚪ psn who has taken the time to do the work, then a direct response to the psn who made the work is good. why? because ⚪ ppl more willingly listen to other ⚪ ppl abt r@cism. yeah, we know that. but plz try to AMPLIFY poc
and try to refrain from the urge to make ur own thinkpieces because it's taking away from our voices. we're asking you lot to listen to and engage with us, not regurgitate what we say in a ⚪-friendly format.
i understand that the pandemic is heightening everyone's anxiety and personal misery. but understand how hard it is for poc who have to deal with anxiety, personal misery and r@cism. we WANT to talk, many of us are passionate abt helping ⚪ ppl understand. so please try. please.
