LAYLAT AL-QADR AND TAFSIR OF SURAH QADR (A🧵)
Bismillah
As we all know, the time for Laylat al-Qadr is near us. This blessed night has been described as “better than a thousand months”. So I find it relevant to present the tafsir of Surah al-Qadr.

THE SURAH AND ITS TRANSLATION:
Surah Al-Qadr (the Decree/Power) [Meccan]
“Indeed, we have sent it (the Qur’an) down in the Night of Qadr.(1) And what may let you know what the Night of Qadr is?(2) The Night of Qadr is better than one thousand months.(3)
The angels and the Spirit descend in it, with the leave of your Lord, along with every command.(4) Peace it is till the emergence of dawn.(5)”
WHY THIS SURAH WAS REVEALED?
In a mursal narration from Mujahid, we read, “The Prophet (SAW) mentioned an Israelite who carried weapons and fought for the sake of Allah for a thousand months. The Muslims were astonished to hear this, and so Allah (SWT) revealed:
(Lo! We revealed it on the Night of Predestination. Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Night of Power is! The Night of Power is better than a thousand months).
He said: ‘This is better than the months in which that man carried his weapons and fought’”. (Asbab an-Nuzul of Al-Wahidi)
“Abdullah ibn Abbas (RA) reports that the Holy Prophet (SAW) was once told about a person from the Bani Isra'Il who carried the weapons of Jihad on his shoulders for a thousand months. Hearing this, he prayed to Allah (SWT) saying,
‘O my Lord! You have granted my Ummah a shorter lifespan than the previous nations due to which their acts (of worship) are lesser (in quantity).’ Consequently, Allah SWT allocated the night of Qadr, the virtue of which exceeds that of a thousand months. (M'alimut Tanzil v4 p513)
THE DATE OF THE NIGHT OF QADR:
Narrated A’ishah (RA) that RasulAllah (SAW) said: “Search for the Night of Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan.” (Bukhari 2017)
WHAT SHOULD BE DONE IN THESE BLESSED NIGHTS:
From Abu Hurayrah (RA) that the Prophet (SAW) said: “Whoever established prayers on the night of Qadr out of sincere faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven." (Bukhari 1901)
From A’ishah (RA): “When the last ten nights began (of Ramadan), Allah's Messenger (SAW) kept awake at night (for prayer and devotion), wakened his family, and prepared himself to observe prayer (with more vigour).” (Muslim 1174)
VERSE-BY-VERSE TAFSIR:
“Indeed, we have sent it (the Qur’an) down in the Night of Qadr.”

“We sent it down/revealed it”
The entire Quran was sent down to the (scribes of the) first heaven from the Lawh al-Mahfudh on this night. (Tafsir Ibn Abbas)
In the Night of Al-Qadr:
The term “Al-Qadr” may have different meanings. The apparent meaning is ‘Decree’ or ‘Power’. The destiny of individuals and nations that was decided in pre-eternity is assigned to the relevant angels. Elsewhere in the Quran, it is stated that:
“Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]. Therein (i.e., on that night) is made distinct every precise matter - (Every) matter (proceeding) from Us. Indeed, We were to send (a messenger)” (Dukhaan 44:3–5)
Also, the Divine Mercy of Allah (SWT) upon His servants was decreed on this night (Tustari).
Some ulama assigned the meaning of ‘greatness, honour and dignity’.
Abu Bakr Warraq has stated that this night is so called because a person becomes a man of honour and dignity on account of repentance, seeking pardon and righteous acts during this night. (Ma’ariful Quran)
It also means ‘a night blessed with forgiveness and mercy’ (Ibn Abbas)
“And what may let you know what the Night of Qadr is?”

“And what may let you know”
This is said to emphasize the importance/high-status/glory of this night. (Ibn Abbas)
“The Night of Qadr is better than one thousand months.”

The greatest virtue of the night has been mentioned in the surah itself. The acts (of worship) performed in this night are better than those performed in a thousand months which do not contain such a night. (Ibn Abbas)
A thousand months equals 83 years and 4 months.
Indeed this night is a great blessing on the Ummah of the Prophet (SAW). In this matter, we have mentioned the Asbab al-Nuzul of Al-Wahidi earlier.
“The angels and the Spirit descend in it, with the leave of your Lord, along with every command.”

“The angels and the Spirit descend in it”
Here, the Rooh (Spirit) refers to Archangel Jibreel (AS).
Anas (RA) narrates that RasulAllah (SAW) said: “When the Night of Qadr occurs, Jibreel (AS) descends on the earth with a huge throng of angels and all of them pray for every servant of Allah, man or woman, busy in salah or dhikr, to be blessed by Allah." (Ma’ariful Quran)
They (the angels) greet the greeting of peace to those who fast and those who pray, on that day, from among the nation of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW). (Ibn Abbas)
“Peace it is till the emergence of dawn.”

The night is a security from every evil, harm and calamity. (Ibn Kathir)
There is all peace, equanimity and complete goodness in this night, having no evil in it. (Qurtubi)
This peace, security and goodness from Allah (SWT) is not restricted to any particular portion of the night but lasts the entire night from nightfall till the break of dawn.
