29 state govts and god knows how many pvt hospitals are competing for vaccines from 2 suppliers (actually just 1).
Of course each govt will try it's best to get the vaccine. So will large hospital chains
This is not a free mkt. This is competition we can do without.
What a mess!
As I have been saying all along, the govt's current vaccine strategy with hyper competition, for the lack of a better term, will create an access problem, with the suppliers having to decide who gets how much.
And that's precisely what has happened.
This is what Adar Poonawalla said in the interview to The Times of London.

The phone calls are the worst thing, says Adar Poonawalla, the biggest manufacturer of vaccines in the world. They are incessant and very menacing, adds the man...
The calls come from some of the most powerful men in India. They come from the chief ministers of Indian states, heads of business conglomerates and others demanding instant supplies of Covishield...
'Threats’ is an understatement,” Poonawalla says. “The level of expectation and aggression is really unprecedented. It’s overwhelming. Everyone feels they should get the vaccine. They can’t understand why anyone else should get it before them.”
India needs 178 cr-190cr vaccines in total, if everyone who hasn't been vaccinated, is to be vaccinated.
The supply in May is likely to be 9 cr vaccines. This will go up to 16 cr by July and a little more once the foreign vaccines come in.
Even 80% are vaccinated, there is a huge demand supply gap. And hence not surprisingly, everyone is calling up Poonawalla.
This is precisely what I had forecast in a piece on April 27: "Should they (the vaccine suppliers) fulfil the demands of state X first or should they sell more to state Y? Or should they sell more to private hospitals, because the price is higher in that case...
...In this scenario, access becomes very important... The phones of the CEOs and the top management of these two companies won’t stop buzzing in the months to come.
Ringing not running...
