A thread about a crow that we’ve named Sam Crow (if you know, you know). He’s got issues.

The image isn’t great (I’m still rocking an iPhone 6) but if you look closely you’ll see the top of his bill is shorter than the bottom. His feathers are also quite ruffled, generally he’s really quite disheveled.

Both of these symptoms appear to be consistent with something called Avain Keratin Disorder or AKD. A rare bird disorder that seems to be more common in the Pacific Northwest than anywhere else. https://corvidresearch.blog/2015/07/20/crow-curiosities-causes-and-consequences-of-bill-deformities/

Sam also has a relentless obsession. For a minute or two multiple times each day he dive bombs a particular pair of seagulls who nest on the roof across the way.

I’ve done a little reading and it seems crows will do this to humans (there’s actually a dive bomb season in this area) to protect ground nesting but that doesn’t seem to be the case here, so what gives? @corvidresearch @subirdia
