#MedTwitter @WokeDoctors Can we talk about how medical school has become increasingly inequitable due to inability of students from low SES backgrounds to afford these egregiously expensive question banks? Yet these companies continue to profit. Exhibit A:
@UWorldMedical
At some point we need to hold these companies accountable. I will tell you why @UWorldMedical has especially perpetuated this inequity. I asked UWorld to provide scholarships to students from low SES backgrounds. Their consistent response been a callous, “NO-we don’t do that.”
Medical school is expensive. But once you get in, what few people tell you is there are board exams and shelf exams that stand between you and what/where you want to practice. They aren’t the only factor but they have a significant baring.
Your performance on these exams is heavily dependent on your access to resources. Namely question banks. These question banks are EXPENSIVE! Will cost you $5K easily -and this is a cost that is not included in your financial aid package & thus not covered by usually scholarships
So what can happens is-students who can’t afford the qbanks are underprepared for the exam, and may not score as well…thus potentially limiting their future speciality choices. And at the center of this dilemma are companies inflating prices. Eg. @UWorldMedical
I am focusing on UWorld because they are the most used qbank, and they’ve exploited this loyalty that medical students have given them. Others-ie. @ambossmed offer scholarships-up to 50%! That are renewable. @OnlineMedEd offers scholarships and has vowed to keep videos free.
@UWorldMedical on the other hand - increases their prices during a PANDEMIC while racking in an annual revenue of $50.2 million.
So tell me again how you can’t afford to help bridge the gap for students? It’s unethical & we as consumers should hold them accountable.
@UWorldMedical STOP perpetuating inequity among medical school students! Offer scholarships and set reasonable limits to your prices. Your practices are unacceptable. #WeAreNotForProfit #StudentsDeserveBetter #MedTwitter #snma #wokedoctors @WokeDoctors @holympus @DrBryanLeyva
