Hi! I’m here to cover a march to the Iowa Capitol for Immigrant reform for the @DMRegister Follow for updates.
Here is the link to the tweet with the demands and location. https://twitter.com/iowammj/status/1387798479708303364
About 50 people are here so far, some more people are gathering.
The group will march at 11:30 to the Capitol. They will have two lanes and will be escorted by DMPD.
Speaker said there’s a fair amount of people already at the Capitol. The march has started.
Group is walking down East Grand Avenue. People are holding the American flag and wearing shirts that say immigration form is a human matter.
Almost at the Capitol. Group is now chanting:
We’re at the Capitol. After asking a few people, they said the chants translate to “yes we can.”
Here are some of the signs the group is holding:
Pastor is leading a prayer in Spanish, accompanied with someone translating in English.
“Please comfort those who have been separated, have been alone and those who have been torn apart from their families because of violence and injustice.”
“Today May 1st we are praying for al immigrant families to find their loved ones.”
Immigration reform can open the doors for the most significant demographic changes, it would mean millions of people would finally come out of the shadows ... immigration reform is an opportunity to unite, speaker said.
Immigrants deserve respect from their representatives, from the state, local and national level, speaker said.
“This past year has shown the whole country that immigrants are not only essential in our workplace, but also in our communities.”
“Immigration reform is decades overdue, our country cannot survive without immigrants”
I think the event is wrapping up, so I’m going to tentatively end this thread. About 80 people showed up. There’s a stand for people to get the shirts and donate to the Latinx Immigration of Iowa organization.
