Started a NC BBQ tour yesterday with a stop at Backyard BBQ Pit in Durham. The fried chicken wings outshined the pork BBQ. Loved the cabbage and greens.
Headed East today to dine on the hood of a rental car w/ the family at Grady’s BBQ in Dudley, NC. It recently reopened after being closed for COVID reasons. Glad to have it back.
Enjoying a damn fine chopped pork sandwich at Wilber’s BBQ in Goldsboro. They have an efficient drive-thru set up, so I’m enjoying this while my ever-patient wife drives. Now serving baby backs on Saturday. – bei Wilber's Barbecue
The NC BBQ Capital. – bei Skylight Inn
Of course I had to get up to @samjones_bbq too. Went with the smoked turkey club for a little variety. – bei Sam Jones BBQ
Back in Raleigh now, so I headed out to @PRIMEBBQ to try some North Carolina brisket. Wow. Lots of great stuff here, especially the pastrami sandwich special. Excellent desserts too. Felt like I was eating in TX. – bei Prime BBQ
Just had to visit the newest location of @samjones_bbq in Raleigh. The Pete Jones BBQ tray is a classic for a reason. I recommend turning the pulled chicken sandwich into a club by adding bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and ranch.
Bypassed @picnicdurham since they’re closed for the week and went up to tiny Hillsborough for a fantastic pork sandwich. They give the option of white, red, or yellow slaw. I got yellow on the brisket plate. Enjoyed the Brunswick stew too.
I ordered a brisket plate at a place called The Pig in NC. That’s on me, but these pickles and hush puppy strings are amazing. Like cornbread meets funnel cake. And this Carolina Cubano features their house cured ham, pork BBQ, and pickled green tomatoes. So good.
Loving these hush puppies and Brunswick stew at Old Time Barbecue in Raleigh. Good pork, slaw, and spicy sauce too. – bei Ole Time Barbecue
Haven’t been to The Pit in Raleigh in 8 years. The poor brisket hasn’t changed, but sadly the chopped pork has regressed. So much vinegar sauce it tasted like pickled pork. Greens were really gritty. The fried chicken (not pictured) was far better.
However, I really did enjoy the sampler appetizer plate at The Pit. Great chicken wings, fried pimento cheese balls, deviled eggs, and egg rolls stuffed w/ collards, pork BBQ, and sweet potatoes.
For years, I went back and forth on here w/ @ColMorrisDavis about TX versus NC BBQ. Today we finally filed it out in person at what he said was the best BBQ in the country. At @RedBridgesBBQ in Shelby. – bei Bridges Barbecue Lodge
On the western side of NC, request the outside brown of the pork shoulders. No seasoning. Just smoke. I wouldn’t trade brisket away for it, but those were some incredible bites. I guess @ColMorrisDavis needs to come to TX for a final showdown. (FYI this is just the warming “pit”) – bei Bridges Barbecue Lodge
Just down the road in Shelby is Alston Bridges BBQ (no relation). Solid pork sandwich and a loaded slaw dog.
In Lowell they cook Boston butts on repurposed fuel oil tanks at Kyle Fletcher’s BBQ. Loved the sandwich, slaw, and beans.
And this slaw dog is here to tell you that there’s no more Twitter crop on photos.
