It looks like a Klimt picture... but it’s actually a painting from one of the greatest neuroscientist in the world. Want to learn more about #RamonyCajal? 🤓 Read below about his revolutionary findings in his birthday ⬇️
Ramón y Cajal was born in Spain in1852. Son of an illiterate shepherd which later became a doctor in his 50’s,he was a passionate painter and a bad student during his childhood. His continuous mischiefs preceded him and he used to bird hunt with his own made weapons.
He wanted to pursue a career in art but his parents convinced him to study medicine. His artistic skills wouldn’t be in vain.
After he graduated in medicine, he was forced to participate in the Cuban War and was very close to dying from malaria. He returned to Spain to buy his own microscope and started looking at neural tissue 🧠 👀.
The revelation came by the hand of another pioneering scientist: the histologist Camillo #Golgi
Until then, it was believed that neural tissue was a compact, undifferentiated mass. The revealing findings were shared in a Congress where #Cajal brought his own microscope and invited the incredulous audience to look at the stained, individual #neurons.
In 1906, #Cajal and #Golgi shared the #NobelPrize for his contribution to the understanding of the structural organization of the #brain, what was called the Neural Doctrine. It was one of the fists jointly awarded prizes in physiology and medicine.
I hope this thread helped you to know better this absolute pioneer. #ramonycajal #cumpleañosfeliz
