One thing about the elite, they network a lot. Mostly among themselves. They're constantly on the phone. Talking to themselves. Exchanging visits. Accross political & ethnic lines. Whatever division may be going on among the rest of us, the elite are 1 tribe. United in patronage.
They don't operate the same 24hrs timetable we use. Perfectly okay for them to show up at each other's gate by 2am. No emergency. Just in the neighbourhood & thought to pop in. It's ok. The host is still awake. Probably hosting another tribe member.
I've always wondered if the lifestyle comes as a result of membership of the tribe or if you have to imbibe the lifestyle to qualify as a Member. I struggle with communications & keeping in touch. I'm also in bed or at least in my house by 10pm. What gives?
Conversations have ensued as to how this state of play affects women participation in politics & power & space at the table. How many women are able to 'gallivant' by 2am visiting people without notice or cause? How many women belong to this 'tribe'?
When you understand that the elite are one tribe irrespective of ethnic & political affiliations, you'll minimise your vitriol towards your fellow hoi polloi. I assure you that they don't abuse each other when they meet. They are perfectly aligned in their outlook.
They sha count on your continuous tearing each other apart to remain united & above the fray looking at all of you like this. For as long as you are facing each other, you won't remember them or hold them responsible & accountable. This has been the play for decades.
The #Endsars movement was the closest the populace came to getting united in their frustration & turning on the authorities. Their reaction to that united action & high-handedness tells you that they didn't expect that unity from you & they'll do everything possible to stop you.
The Nigerian elite is one tribe. United in patronage & pillaging the economy of the Nation. When the rest of the populace decides to be one tribe too & become united in demanding the best for the country, we'll be in business. Until then, we stay on each other's neck over trivia.
Do enjoy your weekend.
