I want to expand on this past the age limit because while accurate it just doesn’t explain enough for me.
Infants don’t know how to regulate their breathing so they frequently suffer from sleep apnea (lack of breath). So they need to be light sleepers so the brain/body knows (1) https://twitter.com/universalamani/status/1388277817637548037

To wake them up so they can start breathing again. This is why there can’t be anything in their cribs while sleeping because they easily suffocate. So bring in melatonin which can knock out grown men.
You give this to a infant who hasn’t not learned to properly breathe yet (2)

And now they’re not able to wake up as easily because they’re basically drugged. So now your child is not breathing, not getting oxygen to their brain and they pass in their sleep, bc they physically couldn’t get up. (3)
This falls under SIDs or sudden infant death syndrome which is more likely to happen during sleep.
Black children have higher rates of SIDs death and I live in cuyahoga county in Ohio; so the black children here have the highest SIDs rate in the COUNTRY (not county).

So the age limit exists because by three your child has (under normal circumstances)
1. Greater control of their lungs
2. Has a more consistent sleep routine
3. And can more than likely physically wake themselves up should their be any issues
