[THREAD] The P.1 variant of COVID-19 was 3.4% of sequenced cases in NYC btwn April 12-18. There were ~17,500 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in NYC that week, so if 3.4% were P.1, that means there ~600 cases of P.1 in NYC during the week ending 13 days ago. https://www1.nyc.gov/assets/doh/downloads/pdf/covid/covid-19-data-variants-042721.pdf
Here's what P.1 is doing in South America. APRIL 29: "Last week, Latin America accounted for 35 percent of all coronavirus deaths in the world, despite having just 8 percent of the global population, according to data compiled by The New York Times." https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/29/world/americas/covid-latin-america.html
"The spread of the virus in the region can be attributed at least in part to a variant called P.1 first identified in the Brazilian city of Manaus late last year..studies indicate P.1 is more transmissible than the original virus.."
"..and P.1 is associated w/ a higher death rate among younger patients and patients w/out pre-existing conditions. It can also reinfect people who have already had Covid, though it’s unclear how often that occurs."
P.1 can also potentially cause disease in an estimated 28-34% of people vaccinated with Moderna, Pfizer, or J&J, AND it can infect 53-58% of vaccinated people, who could pass it on to unvaccinated people.
