When oppressed minorities go from being invisible, and actively oppressed to being more visible, society shifts its narrative to keep oppressing them. ADHD becoming "trendy" isn't the fault of people who raise awareness, but of those who twist the narrative to keep being ableist.
Something similar happened with queerness. We went from active oppression, to assimilation ("you can be queer as long as you're normative in every other sense"), to "everyone is queer these days". Does it ring a bell? That's similar to what's slowly happening now with ADHD.
The increased awareness on ADHD, paired up with the huge percentage of undiagnosed people, has created a social phenomena where it's more and more common to see people realizing they likely have ADHD. This is not a bad thing, on the contrary! But it's perceived as a threat.
It's bringing up issues that have been buried and ignored for many years. The huge rate of misdiagnosis and underdiagnosis, the lack of social and professional awareness on ADHD, the lack of support, and the ignorance people have on ADHD, among many other issues.
Admitting all this means a huge social shift should happen to amend the mistakes and create a better diagnostic and treatment system for those with ADHD. Instead, it's easier to say "everyone has ADHD these days" and keep gaslighting people and diminishing their struggles.
It's not people who have ADHD who make it "trendy". We speak up on it to create awareness and help those who are still unaware they have ADHD. But neurotypicals will take that increased visibility and turn it "trendy" to delegitimize and minimize our struggles.
We can tell when someone really relates to ADHD versus people who say "I'm so ADHD" as an invalidating joke. The difference is obvious. Don't use the latter group to delegitimize our work here. That already happened before, even more with OCD and bipolar. Call them out instead.
