What is one of the biggest lies society tells us?

"I think you are not happy"

Amanda shuts her system down, leaves the office to catch up with her old friends at a restaurant.

They laugh a lot as they revisit old memories and made fun of one another.

Kyle couldn't finish his task for the day. He decided to stay back and finish it.

He plugged in his earphones and worked till 8pm when he finished his task and left for home.

Ordered pizza, then watched an episode on Netflix and dozed off on the sofa
Which one of these two do you think is having an unhappy life?

This might surprise you, but the answer is neither of them.
See, the society expects happiness to always be a visible thing and that it should be expressed in specific patterns.

There is a difference between

Being happy

and

Showing the world that you are happy.

Our definition of happiness may be different from societal perception.
A person sitting with a group of friends, laughing and sharing food with them in a crowded restaurant is considered happy.

While a person sitting and eating alone is considered to be lonely and sad.
What if that 'lonely and sad' person loves their peace and quiet?

What if they avoided friends and came to the restaurant to enjoy their meal without distractions?

They could be finding happiness from every bite they took.
That their behaviour doesn’t fit into how society defines happiness does not mean they are unhappy

The media often showcase people who slog all day, do nothing but work as unhappy people who don’t value life

What makes you conclude that they are not happy?
No one knows the recipe for happiness.

We've all seen people like researchers, scientists, entrepreneurs who yearn to work everyday and are not tired after 18 hours of work

They enjoy work like a glass of wine.

They find the same happiness in work which we find in skydiving
So, next time you want to label someone as unhappy, DON'T
