My tl:dr on NFTs: tech hustlers invented a scam involving digital certificates of authenticity for artwork in order to inject legitimacy and value into their cryptocurrency investments, which are also scams.
NFTs are a pyramid scheme built on the pyramid scheme that Crypto already is: it's all about getting fresh rubes to buy in so you make money off the scam, and those recruited have to entice other rubes to make their own money.
The game with NFTs is in convincing marks that there is collector value attached to a unique electronic reciept that points to a web address and implies that you alone own whatever is there. And, you can only participate in the market by using electronic money they have stake in.
Crypto and NFTs are jaw-droppingly obvious scams, but this is all coming at a time when everyone is really financially desperate and so the allure of quick cash online must be more powerful than usual. Which makes the scam even more vile and exploitative.
