I met with “J’s” daughter in law who cares for him. J is 89 and has lived in sane home his entire life. He is the last of 10 siblings and still gardens and drives his tractor. He doesn’t want to leave home but his daughter in law needs relief because her husband, J’s son, is now
Fighting cancer. So DiL needs to focus on him. So she visited and felt good so she asked her sister-in-law to visit w/her. They were a lovely pair of sisters/in laws & they agreed to bring J by later in the day. A few hours later they return & I sat and talked w/J. He told me
in meticulous detail how to grow the best tomato 🍅 onions 🧅 and zucchini and squash. I let him know that as a city boy I’d never grown a fruit or vegetable & I have no plans to start but if he wanted to grow veggies I’m certain we have a patch of land to do so. I introduced him
To our chef heard the same growing veggie story I did and then said he’d love to have a garden partner. He promised to showcase his vegetables. J said he would install drip system but thankfully chef said he already has one. lol. J used to work for Southern Pacific Railroad. And,
So did his dad, grandpa, and a sibling. He said all told the family had 259 years of service w/Southern Pacific. 259. He’s a long time 49’er season ticket holder so we talked 9’er history- Montana, The Catch, Kezar stadium, Walsh, Young, Craig, Rice. He’d met them all. We enjoyed
Cupcakes and more gardening & football talk before he tired out. He told his “girls” as he called them (both are 60-ish) he was ready to move so the one could care for his son, and the other for her family. He said to pack him up and to remember his 4 shirts in his closet that
were each 49’er shirts. We’re welcoming J with a new 49’er shirt, blanket/throw, and mugg when he moves this weekend.
