1. When we met with @HumzaYousaf following Katie’s death, we asked him if ligature points could be removed from the prison estate. Given that 93% of suicides in prison custody are by the same means. We thought this was a reasonable request.
2. We were told that @scottishprisons would carry out a review. We were given no further details. We have had to resort to FOI requests for Information.
3. A FOI request to the @scotgov revealed that a review had been carried out and that the cost of removing ligature points was “prohibitive”. We assume that means it would be too expensive to avoid further tragedies - prisoners lives are meaningless. No more details were given.
4. A further FOI request to @scottishprisons revealed the cost to be £153m. We asked for further details. A FOI exemption was applied. Apparently it is not in the “public interest” to explain the cost.
5. We believe it is and have asked the information commissioner to review the decision. 3 years on and hooks on walls, light fittings and furnishings remain. They have been used at least 20 times since Katie’s death.
