Watching Scott Stringer attack Jean Kim, with so many brave people coming forward to share their own stories of being bullied, I believe them, because it happened to me too.
In 2017, Stringer told me to stop trying to pass campaign finance reform if I wanted his support.
That legislation would make it possible to run for office in NYC by taking only small donations matched by the City. It would be a blow to real estate developer money, which Stringer relied on.
In 2018, NYC voters passed much of the public matching system I had proposed by referendum, and when the Council was ready to pass my bill to do the rest, Stringer called me. I tried to explain why it would be good for everyone, especially the voters.
Scott Stringer threatened me, told me not to move forward with the reform I had run for office to achieve.
When I said no, Scott Stringer cursed at me. He told me he's never liked me, and said he would do everything in his power to stop me, that he would endorse against me, and that I would never be borough president.
I know I'm not the only one he threatened, because other council members called me to share similar experiences. All of them did the right thing in the face of serious threats.
We passed the law and flipped where candidates get their money from: now it's mostly small dollars, not real estate. We have more women of color, immigrants, and people from marginalized communities running than ever before.
Whenever I see Stringer, he tries to avoid even greeting me, and whenever he thinks he can get away with it, he still curses at me. This is not okay from someone with that much power.
Scott Stringer should not be Mayor, let alone Comptroller. The last thing New York City needs is our own Cuomo.
