I think his top tier writing has been vastly VASTLY over shot by many fan. It was very good yes but very far from being what people described and in most arcs some flaws were glaring.

You can see this problem with uprising and the rumbling in the way the writing the alliance to face eren was weird and sometimes unnatural. He however excels in one on one character writing ( eren/zeke, eren/reiner). He used some obvious glaring plot devices ( the path)

The way eren obtains his hardening powers, reiner transferring his consciousness into his ass which was pure BS.)everyone's is dropping to zero during eren's take over in paradis
Those flaws were always there, fans simply overlooked them and looked at the series with pink goggles
