1/ Technological advances appear effortless, but are built on decades of work.

Many “modern” inventions, from streaming to electric cars, have been 100+ years in the making.

Tech advances civilization, which improves tech in an accelerating cycle.
2/ Lessons from America’s startup nebula

The drive to innovate is global, but few places foster deep tech like the US

Ingredients for turning science into startups:
--> Inclusivity
--> Strong research institutions
--> An early adopter (gov/military)
3/ Global Connection, Emotional Distance?

Often, tech is like a magnet. It can attract/repel depending on how it’s used.

You can have a meeting across the globe, but be far away from people right next to you.

Powerful tools need proper safeguards.
4/ Deep tech demands dedication.

Many people have boundless ambition but limited patience.

Breakthroughs are bound to the pace of science, and expertise takes years to build.

2 ways to teach kids to enjoy the *process* of learning:
--> Read
--> Play an instrument
5/ Time from paper -> patent -> product is shrinking.

Ambitious science is now de-risked at school + hard tech is hard to copy.

Deep tech investing’s asymmetric upside:
--> Worst case, you go to 0.
Best case is a 10 to 100x improvement in millions of lives, --> incredible ROI
6/ Science + story

Legendary founders excel at creating tech, but are also “world builders”.

The ability to paint a vision for investors, employees, and consumers is essential.

It’s rare for one person to do both well. Seek a balanced team.
7/ From robots to “cobots”
Ideally, robots don’t replace people, they complement them
Old model: https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🤖" title="Robotergesicht" aria-label="Emoji: Robotergesicht"> as servants
Current fear: https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🦾" title="Mechanischer Arm" aria-label="Emoji: Mechanischer Arm"> as replacements
Future framing: robots as collaborators
8/ Defense vs Devastation

The difference between a weapon and a tool is often human nature.
War is evolving (bio, cyber, disinformation) but conflicts still start/end because of people.
We can’t assume tech will be used for good, so prioritize ethics when investing in defense.
9/ We face 3 pressing crises: climate change, food insecurity, crowded cities.

We have tech to address these issues…but tools only as good as the people who use them.
Society must respect science.
We need the patience to learn, discipline to act, and empathy to collaborate.
10/ Many thanks to my @Lux_Capital colleagues @McCreadieWill and @CatieLynn127 for helping make this happen.
