Something that always bothered me about Steve's characterization in mcu was that it felt like we didn't really get to KNOW him like we know other characters. We got some hints but we had to fill in the gaps ourselves. Like we know he had personal struggles but we never really got
to see him challenge these in a way that felt complete or emotionally cathartic. We never got to see him struggle emotionally in an ugly way. He had to be faultless. "Not a perfect soldier but a good man" and then they focused too hard on the "good" and not enough on the "man".
We know who Captain America is but we relied on fanon to know who Steve is. I saw a great thread on this awhile ago but can't find it now. But they never really let us know Steve as a person or a human being, instead held him to this impossible standard and left it at that
