Friday night thread, right on cue...An old friend was Glenn Danzig's tour manager for a couple of tours, years and years ago. He would tell the most hilarious stories about him trying to act like a rock star, and making a fool out of himself, but none of them topped this one.
Apparently, he insisted that during rehearsals with his hired band, they start the set as if he's actually playing a show, with him "off-stage", which meant out in the hallway right out of the rehearsal room in the complex he rented a space in.
The band would start the first song and he would run into the room, just in time for him to sing the first line. Anything that prevented this from happening in perfect sync would cause him to lose his mind and the band would have to start again. Apparently, it happened a lot.
This would go on and on sometimes. This upset his front of house mixer (the guy that mixed the band on tour who Glenn demanded be there for rehearsals, despite there being no real PA there other than mics for singing). Part of his job was to make sure his mic was "ready to go".
It had to be set down low, so Glen could loosen the height adjustment and raise it up where he wanted, making him "look cool" just before he would sing the first line. Well, that guy had enough of it one night.
He used a pair of vice grips and tightened it so much that it was more or less locked at that height - this was during the first show of that tour. So, Glen runs onto the stage and tries to raise the mic and it might as well have been welded together - it simply wouldn't move.
He also superglued the mic to the clip, so he couldn't take the mic off the stand either. As Glen struggled with it, he literally wouldn't stop trying to loosen it up or remove it for the entire first song and didn't sing a note before he slammed the whole rig to the ground.
He went backstage and started screaming at people and breaking things in a complete rage. He eventually returned to the stage with a new mic and stand and finished the set. The crowd was apparently laughing the whole time.
The mixing guy was fired, but had already booked his flight home and was at the airport with plenty of time. He told the manager that "he couldn't stand another day with him" after being constantly yelled at for things that didn't matter and were all about ego.
I've hear lots and lots of rock and roll stories from first-hand witnesses, but the image of Glenn out there in front of an audience, desperately trying to get that mic in front of his face, almost makes me piss my pants laughing every single time. End of thread.
