About the current #NFT situation and it's environmental impact:

I see a lot of people talking about it, but nobody using actual numbers to back up their claims. So I'm going to do it.

All sources are at the end of the thread.

Global Co2 emissions average at 30 billion tons/year.
NFTs have emitted about 384 377 tons of Co2 (estimations) in the last 12 month, which is ≈0.0013% of global emissions.
For comparison, global aviation is responsible for ≈2.5% of global Co2 emissions or ≈750 millions tons/year (192 208% more than NFTs)
In conclusion: NFT power consumption and Co2 emissions is huge, but compared to global emissions it is so low that it is negligible. The claim that "NFTs are destroying the environment" is greatly exaggerated:
NFTs are indeed contributing to climate change, but their impact is so low that it is practically insignificant.
However, there is hope: NFT marketplaces are becoming aware of the massive amount of emissions caused by their services and are working on building more energy efficient blockchains to reduce their impact.
