I am cutting my Western Civ students some slack and assigning what I am calling a Final Reflection Assignment rather than a traditional exam. I had fun making the assignment and am sharing it here in case anyone wants to borrow a question. 4 questions, 6-8 sentences each.
1. What is one major difference between this course and the history courses you took in high school? You may discuss what was taught, how that material was taught, or a combination of the two. Be specific about what went on in both courses.
2. If you had to read more writing from any author we read this semester, which one would you pick? Why? As part of your answer tell me about a specific passage from the text that you find particularly thought-provoking.
3. One of the purposes of a Western Civ class is to help prepare students for democratic citizenship. If you had to assign one text from our course as required reading for the entire American public, which would you choose? Why?
4. History class and history books are no substitute for time travel. If you could take a monthlong trip to any era (a specific place in a specific time) from our course, where/when would you visit? This can be an era you think it would be fun to experience (a vacation in time),
[4 cntd] an era you would not find pleasurable but would still like to understand better (a research trip in time), or a combination of the two. (Pretend that time travel itself is simple and safe but allow for the possibility that you might come to harm in your destination.)
