People don't want kids to learn about the 1619 project, then teach them about the two times Unites States Government transferred huge amounts of wealth in our history. The first is The Homestead Act, the single biggest transfer of wealth. 1/
After slavery was abolished, the U.S. gave land to whites and Europeans out west, but excluded those same freed slaves. After WWII the 2nd biggest transfer of wealth in U.S. History occurred through two programs, the G.I Bill and the VA Home Loan program. 2/
Both of these were Federal programs, but run by the states that systematically excluded black vets coming back from the war, while veterans were able to get a college education, a step up on the ladder to the middle class, and a home loan through the VA. 3/
But for the African America, institutional racism in banking and education meant blacks vets were denied admission to colleges and turned down for VA loans. The story goes far deeper than many people want to admit. 3/
Dr. King said that the notion of pulling one's self up by his bootstraps is a cruel jest to the bootless man. African Americans were left bootless by this nation which can be directly tied to many of the current problems the community still faces. 4/
But people like Mitch McConnell and others don't what these truths to be told, because they need their base to view us as a bunch of lazy, shiftless, bloodsuckers who are constantly looking for a handout.
