Multiple rails core team members have bailed on the project, now. This one guy just lit a massive open source legacy on fire as part of his exit tantrum over this new policy.
These language communities have breaking down for a few years now under the weight of this activist nonsense. The code-of-conduct wars of a few years ago were the first big blowup, but this implosion has been brewing for a while. More FOSS communities will implode, not just rails
Everything is identity, purity tests, & status games in these repos & at the conferences. It's a wonder any software gets written at all. If anyone is resigning over this Basecamp memo, then I am really glad to see them go. There will be less drama.
This thread of dramatic exits... inject it straight into my veins. In 12 months every project & company that these folks have flounced from will be better off. https://twitter.com/webology/status/1387234172708786183
Very few corners of FOSS have managed to keep this toxic identitarian culture at bay — mostly in the more legacy language & highly technical projects where the bar for contribution is very high. As this rolling, multi-year disaster continues to unfold, more will be shaken.
I have seen massive repo blowups over pull request rejections, with the submitters trying to smear the repo owners as racist/sexist/etc. b/c of the submitter's identity characteristics. They would not hear that their code sucked. It had to be an ism.
Way, way, WAY more programmers are sick to death of all this crazypants than will speak up about it, b/c everyone is terrified of a career-limiting dragging on social media. These folks will step up & take the jobs & projects left by the tantrum throwers.
