It's been a while since I made a foodie thread, and this evening I am INSPIRED so... what about a thread on

🍮 SICILIAN TRADITIONAL SWEETS 🍮

because there's much more than just cannoli!
1. GELO DI MELLONE

This is my favourite. It's watermelon jelly garnished with - as made by my palermitan mother-in-law - cinnamon, pistachios and chocolate drops. It's fruity and fresh and delicious to taste in a hot summer afternoon
2. CASSATA SICILIANA

This delicious cake is made with sheep ricotta, sugar cane and candied fruit. It was a typical easter cake, but now it's eaten whenever, because it's just too delicious
3. BUCCELLATI/CUCCIDDATI

These are a kind of cookies filled with caramelized figues, sometimes covered in sprinkles, often consumed for christmas festivities. I have yet to decide if I love them or hate them but one thing's for sure - you won't forget their taste
4. NACATULI

Other christmas sweets are these buiscuits from the Eolie isles, filled with almond paste flavoured with malvasia wine and citruses. They are as tasty as they are beautiful!
5. SFOGLIO POLIZZANO

Typical of the Madonie mountains, the sfoglio is a soft cake filled with cinnamon and tuma cheese. And, of course, some candied fruit!
6. MUCCUNETTI

these delicious, small bites are filled with a peculiar jam created in sicily: the zuccata, a marmalade made from a type of long yellow corgette.
7. FRUTTA DI MARTORANA

king of all sicilian sweets is the 'frutta di martorana'. It's 'just' fruit made of marzipan, originated in the Palermitan area. It's sickeningly sweet and I LOVE IT.
8. CANNOLO

yeah, of course I could not... not mention it. But do you know that its actually of Arab origin? According to the legend, it was invented by the women living in the Harem of Qalc'at al-Nissa (nowadays Caltanissetta)
And this would be all!! Hope I made you hungry!!
