It’s nearly the end of lesbian visibility week and I’ve seen nobody talk abt lesbian issues irl and everything has only been surrounding lesbophobia online. So here’s a thread of issues/harmful things lesbians face irl
1. Fetishisation towards lesbians.
we are fetishised an awful lot and it isn’t talked about nearly enough as it should be, which makes me feel disgusting honestly. it’s sad we’re only seen as a porn category for some, a fetish. +
fetishisation reduces us to objects that are only wanted for consumption to different groups of people. we’re seen as entertainment and very little to no one treats us with proper respect. you can’t say “I support lesbians!” and then go on Pornhub and click the lesbian category.
that isn’t how it works unfortunately!! /s please be aware of this and how dehumanising it is! Also, a lot of people seem to forget other sexuality’s in the lgbt+ community can fetishise lesbians, not just straight men/straight women. This includes bi, pan, gay etc.. +
And it doesn’t matter ur Gender identity, please be mindful of what content your consuming and if it’s harmful

2. Making jokes

i think a really common thing irl is straight women making jokes about being lesbians when all theyre doing is telling their friends they love them. +
I just feel like its minimizing the struggles we face when trying to show affection for OUR partners in public.

It’s pretty self explanatory, just don’t make jokes involving lesbians or use lesbian as some affectionate word if you’re straight or even any other sexuality.
3. Not taking our struggles seriously

This can apply to online as well as offline but it’s important.

People who aren’t lesbian need to stop weaponising lesbophobia that comes from from non lesbians, it’s another thing if you’re bringing attention towards it but a completely+
different story if you’re speaking over or for us.

Also, a lot of people seem to weaponise lesbophobia yet don’t care about any other lesbian issues, and spread little to zero information on actual important lesbophobia. It really sucks to see that our struggles are, yet again
seen as entertainment and nothing more. please take us seriously for once.
Tw // rape

4. Corrective rape

corrective rape is still a thing that lesbians all around the world suffer from, from the hands of strangers to even friends and family. corrective rape is a is a hate crime in which a person is raped because of +
their perceived sexual orientation or gender identity. the ‘goal’ is to turn the person heterosexual or enforce conformity with gender stereotypes. it is still happening in today’s society. please talk about this, always. Protect lesbians, and make this Heard +
These story’s come out all the time yet they’re ignored. Please, don’t be blind and ignorant just because it isn’t happening where you are or to someone you know.
5. Acceptance, inclusion

lesbians can be shown out of their family after coming out, or their homes can become unsafe. it’s scary and it’s very upsetting to think this still happens but it does and it’s a big issue! Young lesbians, especially bipoc lesbians should feel +
safe, included and represented in their environment and community, regarding their sexual orientation. showing support for lesbians online and thinking lesbophobia only exists online is what makes this worse, bc nobody is aware or you choose to be unaware on +
how unsafe it can be for young lesbians. growing up without support can lead to many physiological issues later in life. support young lesbians. protect bipoc & trans lesbians!! They’re loved and need to be safe!!

6. How lesbians are villainised

tw // rape

Some people think lesbians are some rapists trying to convert straight girls into sapphics by raping them and more.... i think the lesbian porn section on ph probably pushes that narrative too since someone showed me
how many “lesbians force straight girls to try lesbian sex" videos r on there... some films with “lesbian” representation (which is bad enough) push this too

this came from my cc
and i couldn’t agree more, the way the media portrays us, whether it be sexual or not, it’s not ok
7. tma lesbians struggles/ignoring them when it comes to activism or supporting lesbians

tma lesbians go though a lot inside and outside of the lesbian community. transmisogyny like "you cant be a lesbian because you trans"/"you arent a real lesbian" or people saying that
they’re dangerous because they’re trans is extremely harmful and transphobic.. when saying you support lesbians and tweeting happy lesbian visibility week INCLUDE everybody, especially tma lesbians.
The attacks and injustice that happens to trans lesbians is a big issue and it needs to be talked about more. Being trans doesn’t make you any less of a lesbian. If you don’t support tma lesbians you don’t support lesbians.
