Happy #InternationalJazzDay
Seriously though, here's a thread of my reviews of jazz related movies. The late Bertrand Tavernier's 'ROUND MIDNIGHT stars saxophone great Dexter Gordon, and he's so good in it he was nominated for best actor. https://outlawvern.com/2017/02/27/round-midnight/
STRAIGHT, NO CHASER is great and sad and beautiful. A story of someone who just saw and heard everything differently, causing both triumph and tragedy. https://outlawvern.com/2017/01/05/thelonious-monk-straight-no-chaser/
"That's right, the people don't come because you grandiose motherfuckers don't play shit that they like." Is MO' BETTER BLUES the only jazz movie actually set in the '90s? https://outlawvern.com/2017/01/04/mo-better-blues/
In that review I get into a little tangent about Spike Lee's distinct movie poster style. How fucking cool is it that MO' BETTER BLUES is presented to us by its director (as his character in the movie)?
As I wrote in my review, I think MILES AHEAD "didn't get much attention for the same reason it's good: it's a small, odd movie, not fulfilling most expectations of a musician biopic. I'm not sure if it even is a musician biopic." https://outlawvern.com/2016/08/23/miles-ahead/
Don't worry, I won't put LA LA LAND on this thread, but here's an earlier Damien Chazelle musical about a jazz musician. https://outlawvern.com/2017/02/23/guy-madeline-park-bench/
