This week we published our @ETC_Energy report on clean #hydrogen
in an electrified economy
. I will be posting some key insights here in the next 2 wks.
Today, I start w/ our vision for the role of #CleanHydrogen for #NetZero2050.

#CleanHydrogen in a #netzero world will play a critical role in sectors where direct electrification will likely remain impossible or uneconomic for many decades.
Electrify wherever possible. Use hydrogen wherever not possible.
Electrify wherever possible. Use hydrogen wherever not possible.
We have high confidence in the role of #CleanHydrogen for already existing uses - like ammonia for fertiliser, or methanol.
And think that hydrogen use in steel
, shipping
, aviation
and power storage
is highly likely to develop.

For some sectors, the precise balance between #hydrogen and #electrification and other decarbonisation routes (bio, CCS) remains uncertain.
A lot depends on
local circumstances and technology developments
: like high temperature heat
, plastics and HDV trucking.
A lot depends on

All this means:
Depending on energy efficiency improvements overall, & if all of the above use cases materialise as suggested -
The illustrative scenario we anticipate is a #cleanhydrogen demand of 500-800 Mt by 2050

That's 5-7x more #hydrogen use than today.
Given that less than 1 Mt today is produced in a clean fashion
this means an increase of up to 1000x.
In other words, we start from almost zero & need to accelerate supply and demand simultaneously to be on a #netzero path for 2050
